Despite Injury, Hewitt gears up for US Open

Australian tennis No.1 Lleyton Hewitt is in no doubt for next month's US Open despite withdrawing from another ATP tournament with a persistent calf injury.

Hewitt pulled out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto after failing to recover from the calf injury he suffered in his first round match at the Washington event.

The 29-year-old former world No.1 pulled out in the second set while trailing Alejandro Falla, 7-5 3-2.

Argentinian David Nalbandian beat Marcos Baghdatis in the tournament final on Sunday.

Hewitt, currently ranked world No.30, said on his personal website that he needed to pull out of Toronto to focus on treatment.

He is determined to play in the Masters event in Cincinnati, which starts on Sunday August 15, and then the US Open, which starts in New York on August 30.

Hewitt won the US Open back in 2001 and was runner-up to Roger Federer in 2004

"It's just one of those things that can happen and my focus now is to have treatment daily to enable me to play the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati and then the US Open.

"It is not the best preparation for a Grand Slam event, but there is nothing else I can do."

His manager David Drysdale said withdrawal was a precautionary measure.

"He's taken the medical advice not to play, it was a sa fety issue," he said.

"He's just got a slight strain and he'll start hitting again in the next day or two and he'll definitely be playing in the US Open."

Drysdale said Hewitt had no problems with his hips, which have troubled him since 2008 and required two rounds of surgery.

"He's had no problems at all there.
