Kurt Thomas Busch born in the city of Sin, Las Vegas, Nevada on August 4, 1978 is a second generation NASCAR driver. The Chicago Cubs fan was recently married in Virginia in 2006 and currently lives in North Carolina with their dogs. Like many other NASCAR drivers, Busch started off racing in go-karts but when he moved on to the Dwarf Car Series in Las Vegas that spurred him onto bigger things. One of those bigger things that happened was when Jack Roush hired him to run a full Craftsman Truck Series schedule and a handful of cup races in 2000. It only took Kurt 6 years to go from Dwarf Car rookie of the year to competing with the big dogs of NASCAR. This caused a build up of tension when Roush invited him to race in the Winston Cup Series while bypassing Busch's more qualified teammate, Greg Biffle. He was named Truck Rookie of the Year the same year after his four wins and finishing in the top 20 in a limited Cup Schedule. With all those claims to victory under his belt, Roush placed Busch to NASCAR's top series full time in 2001. The year after that, Busch won his first Cup race at Bristol and won three more races that season. Fast-forwarding a couple of years later, Busch won the NASCAR's inaugural Chase for the Nextel Cup.

In 2002, Busch garnered more attention on the Winston Cup Series and finished the season exceedingly well with winning three out of final five races, finishing third and sixth. 2003 called for attention too but not all good publicity. Busch and driver, Jimmy Spencer, had a rough patch after a public throw down which caused both drivers to be fined and placed on probation for the rest of the year. The action caused a lot of damage to Busch's reputation and he was losing fans as a result of the fight.

Played over a period of a couple of months, this year's tournament promises to be one of the best ever, with the initial tournament outsiders, Australia, a revelation so far. The Wallabies warmed up for the tournament with two games against France and wow...they were spectacular. They won both matches in emphatic style and in so doing signalled their warning to their two Tri-nation rivals, New Zealand and South Africa. Almost as impressive however were the All Blacks, who firstly beat the plucky Irish before going on to demolish England, who were sent home ingloriously with a poor show on the pitch and an embarrassing one off it. While the Antipodeans were bashing the brains out of France, Ireland and England, World Champions, South Africa, were being just as ruthless against Six Nations Champions, Wales, winning their series 2-0. The results of all these matches proved conclusively that the gulf between southern and northern hemisphere rugby is as wide as ever!

With the warm ups over, the first game in the Tri-Nations was played between New Zealand and South Africa in Wellington, where in a memorably tough game, the All Blacks out fought the 'Springboks' and justified their favouritism for the tournament. Although there were only two tries scored, the game was played in an intensity that is only equalled when either of these two nations plays the Aussies.

What happened next was unthinkable or was it? The Springboks proved why they are World Champions and they came back ferociously in their second game against the All Blacks, just a week later. They came out on top with a 30-28 victory winning the game with a last minute try when they were down to 14 men on the field. The All Blacks were in shock; they had clawed defeat out of the jaws of victory and incurred their first home defeat for 30 matches.

With new found confidence and with the hearts of lions the South Africans made their way to Perth to play against the Aussies. They were betting odds favourites to win and the Australians knew it. They pounced on the Springboks from the off start and slowly 'turned the screw' as the match became increasingly intense. The Australians scored two great tries without reply and ran out unexpected winners 16-9. It was difficult to tell who were the most surprised at the end, the look on the faces of the Australian players suggested that they were. They clearly did not realise how much progress they had made since the World Cup and the only way to confirm it was to beat the All Blacks the following week. A feat they most magnificently managed, beating the Tri-Nations champions emphatically 34-19. They now have to repeat that performance this week just to prove they have not been dreaming.

The scene is now set for the next phase of the tournament, Australia against New Zealand in two tests to be played in Australia.

Murrays Turn For US Open Glory

In many ways the US Open Tennis Championships that begins at Flushing Meadow in New York at the end of August heralds the end of the summer season of sport and what a summer it would be if, and I appreciate this is a big if, Scot Andy Murray could win it.

Before you go off one, it should be remembered that Andy Murray has recently been raised in the World rankings to number six and in many peoples eyes he is even better than that. The way in which Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the Cincinatti Masters last week suggested that Murray has come of age as a tennis player, the talent that we all knew he possessed is surfacing like a submarine breaking water for the first time after being underwater for years. He tanned Djokovic in an awesome display of power tennis; he beat the Serb at his own game and looked very much the better player in so doing. The win confirmed that there was no luck attached to Murray's victory over Djokovic the week before in Toronto, when he knocked him out in the quarter final there. Again in two straight sets.

Djolovic who, it could be said, rose to stardom a year ahead of Murray is the number three ranked player in the world and it had been thought he and the other two, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were streets ahead of anyone else. That is plainly not the case based on Murray's performances in these two Masters tennis betting events. In fairness Nadal had beaten Murray in the Toronto semi finals, but even the great Nadal succumbed to a brilliant display by Djokovic in the semi finals of Cincinatti, losing for the first time in 43 matches and five tournaments. Federer of course was bounced out of both events early doors and without as much as a whimper.

It is Federer however who is the reigning Champion at Flushing, he got the better of Djokovic in the final last year but then was knocked out of the semi final by Djokovic in the Australian Open a few months later. This means that Federer now has only one Grand Slam title to his name and he knows that Nadal, Federer and Murray are after him like a pack of hounds. Surely one of the three will take this final crown off his regal head and consign him to the past tense at Flushing Meadow. For my money Murray is the one most likely to achieve it, if the draw goes well and he can avoid Nadal and Djokovic until the final he can win and become the first Briton to win a singles Grand Slam since Virginia Wade. He has everything he needs, the perfect game for hard court tennis, he has psychologically come of age and knows he can beat anyone on his day, but the confidence gained form such a breakthrough win at Cincinatti has convinced him that quite simply, that it his turn.
